My Business Bookkeeping Is a Mess can still leave room for a year you can read.
The sort is the past. A matched month is the present. The year ahead is a choice you can see.

A year you can point at
Imagine opening the year and seeing months that each tied to the bank. Not a perfect story. A true one. The catch-all is empty or it is a short list. Personal costs are on the household side. The chart is short enough that fuel on a Tuesday takes one try.
That year is what the return stands on. It is also what a conversation in the fall can stand on, because a choice about equipment, pay, or a slow season needs months that already happened, not a guess about months that might.
What we will not paint over
We will not drop a round number into an open month to make a graph look calm. We will not call a deposit income because the total looks better that way. If you funded the company, the file should say you funded the company. The relief is the match, not a prettier loss or a prettier profit.
A roof invoice in an ordinary month
A storm season is when a roof invoice arrives in a month that was supposed to be ordinary. Anyone who has replaced a roof knows that feeling. The year you can read has a place for that invoice. The year that is a mess buries it in the bucket, and next spring you cannot remember which building it fixed. We leave the invoice on the month it was paid, with a note that says which roof, so the year after does not have to guess.
Payroll, if you have people, is set up so the provider click lands in the right accounts. The return comes after the match. A signed bank opinion, if you need one, is introduced as another firm cover, not as a surprise in December.
The monthly pack after that is plain. A balance sheet, a profit statement, and the bank page that shows the match. You should be able to find last month without a tour. If a line still needs a receipt, it sits on a short list instead of hiding inside a total.
You can hand those months to a lender without first explaining a bucket that no longer holds anything.
The year you want quiet
Tell us which year is the open one. Last year, this year, or both.
